The Dallas Stars were created before 1993/1994 when the former team Minnesota North Stars closed down and moved to Dallas. In the 1999 season, Stars won their first and so far only Stanley Cup victory. This after they defeated the Buffalo Sabers in the third overtime period. Brett Hull scored the decisive goal on Dominik Hasek. With this Stanley Cup, Derian Hatcher became the first non-Canadian and the first American to lift the trophy first as team captain. In the 2000 season, the Stars were in the finals again, but were defeated by the New Jersey Devils. In 2001-02, the team moved from the old Reunion Arena to the American Airlines Center.
